Sew-On, Velcro or Heat-Seal: The Right Backing for Custom Biker Patches for Vests

Choosing the wrong backing is the most common mistake we see on custom biker patches for vests, so here's the straight answer by material. Leather vests: use sew-on or plastic backing. Heat-seal (iron-on) backing does not work on leather. The heat needed to activate the adhesive will mark or shrink the hide, and the glue won't bond properly anyway. Plastic backing adds stiffness so a large patch holds its shape against a soft leather panel. Denim vests and jackets: heat-seal works and holds well. For anything larger than about 4 inches, we still recommend a few stitches at the corners for highway-speed security. Riders who swap gear: choose Velcro (hook and loop) backing to move patches between a summer vest and a winter jacket in seconds.
