About Custom Chenille Patches
Chenille is the fuzzy, raised texture on a varsity letterman jacket. Instead of flat embroidery thread, the design is built from looped yarn stitched onto a felt base, giving a thick pile you can feel under your hand. It is a fundamentally different look from embroidery — softer, bolder, and unmistakably associated with school and college athletics.

What chenille can and cannot do
Chenille yarn is thick, which is the whole point and also its main limitation. It builds bold letters and simple shapes beautifully, and it fails at fine detail — thin lines, small text, and intricate logos are not possible in chenille at any size. This is why almost every chenille patch you have seen is a single large letter, a number, or a simple mascot outline. Where a design needs both, chenille is combined with embroidery: the letter or shape in chenille, and any small text or fine detail embroidered around or over it. That combination is standard on varsity work.

Size, felt, and construction
Chenille patches are made larger than embroidered ones because the yarn needs room to read as texture — most fall between four and twelve inches. The base is wool or wool-blend felt, chosen in a colour that usually forms part of the design, often with a contrasting felt border layer beneath the main shape to create an outline effect. Because the patch is thick and heavy, sew-on backing is standard; heat-seal adhesive cannot hold this weight, and there is too much bulk for it to bond evenly. Most letterman patches are stitched on by hand or by an alterations service.

Care and durability
Chenille pile flattens and collects lint. Brushing it gently with a soft brush lifts the yarn back up and keeps the texture looking right. Dry cleaning is safer than machine washing for a jacket carrying chenille patches, because agitation mats the pile and hot water shrinks the felt base. Never iron directly on chenille — the pile crushes permanently and does not recover. Treated reasonably, a chenille patch outlasts the jacket it is sewn to, which is why letterman jackets get handed down.
